What you should know

Axolotls are gentle aquatic salamanders from Mexico that keep their feathery, frilly gills their whole lives, making them look like underwater puppies! They are completely harmless to people and cannot hurt you. In the wild they are critically endangered, but many people keep them as pets in aquariums.

Whoa

Axolotls can regrow entire lost limbs, including bones, muscles, and nerves, and scientists study them to understand how this amazing healing might one day help humans.

Staying safe around it

This one is genuinely harmless to people. Still look with your eyes and let it go about its day.

Always ask a grown-up before you touch any animal or plant. If something bites or stings you, tell an adult right away.
